An ankle sprain occurs when there is injury to one or more ligaments of the ankle, most commonly found on the outside of the ankle. Sprains can range in severity, whether the ligament is stretched, partially torn, or has suffered a complete tear.
Ankle sprains can come as a result of any type of movement that forces the ankle out of its normal position, including a fall, sudden twist, or blow. They can even result from improper shoes being worn for sports or walking/running on an uneven surface.
Due to the range in severity of ankle sprains, there are a variety of ways you can treat your sprain, both non-surgically and via surgical methods. Traditional resting, icing, and elevating methods can provide at-home relief until you can seek out medical attention. In cases involving damaged ligament(s), our team can discuss other surgical options depending on your current situation.
